The Brussels World's Fair of 1958 was an important moment in the postwar history of Belgium. It was also an important monument in honour of a modern utopian era which was to bring peace and reconciliation to mankind, with the help of new technologies. Belgium was well served when it came to world fairs in the twentieth century: as well as Expo 58, there were fairs in Brussels in 1935, in Antwerp and Liège in 1930, in Ghent in 1913 and again in Brussels in 1910. A mixture of futurism, exoticism and traditionalism defined these fairs. They fixed their respective epochs, including the dreams, obsessions and anxieties that came with them. As of 1910, these historical snap-shots were themselves fixed on film by a varied range of directors. The Royal Belgian Film Archive is browsing in its collection.

L’Exposition Internationale de Bruxelles 1958 fut un moment important dans l’histoire de la Belgique d’après-guerre. Elle se voulait un monument à la modernité, visée utopique qui apporterait avec l’aide des nouvelles technologies paix et réconciliation entre les hommes. La Belgique organisa de multiples expositions internationales au cours du vingtième siècle: avant l’Expo 58, il y eut celles de Bruxelles en 1935, d’Anvers et Liège en 1930, de Gand en 1913 et de Bruxelles en 1910. Le mélange entre futurisme, exotisme et traditionalisme était de mise à chacune de ces expositions qui se voulaient le reflet de leur époque – rêves, obsessions et anxiété inclus. Dès 1910, ces expositions, véritables instantanés du quotidien, furent fixées sur pellicule par des cinéastes d’horizons divers. Het moment was ook een belangrijk monument, ter ere van een utopische moderne tijd die de mensheid vrede en verzoening zou brengen. De nieuwste technologieën gingen de mens daarbij helpen. België is in de twintigste eeuw op het vlak van wereldtentoonstelling rijk bedeeld geweest: naast Expo 58, was er ook een Brussel 1935, Antwerpen en Luik 1930, Gent 1913 en Brussel 1910. Ook toen gold eenzelfde mix van futurisme, exotisme en traditionalisme. Elke wereldtentoonstelling legde zijn tijd vast - dromen, obsessies en angsten inbegrepen.
